No room for racism in astrology

There should be no room for racism in any astrological practice, professional conferences included.

I’ve made my values clear in my statement of practice since Day One. I am in solidarity with the African-American astrologers and astrologers of colour who have borne the brunt of the fallout over the incident at UAC where a well-known, established, white male astrologer used a slur, and did not show any interest in accountability or restorative work or engagement with the harmed communities beyond a performative ‘apology.’ When I was a baby astrologer I used to read this person’s books. A few sections were interesting at the time but some concepts felt more like a personal projection rather than being rooted in any kind of rigorous astrological foundation. Eventually my practice moved on to the more technically challenging, historically grounded classical traditions.

Rather than dwell on the incident from a distance, I’d rather use this space to promote the work of astrologers of colour whose work I’ve loved and admired.

Kirah’s perceptive, timing-driven approach to astrology really helped me confront the fears I faced at the time. I also learned a lot about running an astrology business from our conversations. Kirah is amazing at balancing entrepreneurial savvy with a genuine grassroots community focus. I’m glad I met her at the earliest stage of my professional astrology journey.

I still revisit the videos of Sam Reynolds every now and then. Sam’s witty, no-nonsense approach to interpreting placements are pure gold. His side quest stories, like setting up a meeting with a scammer who tried to impersonate him, are peak Scorpio astrologer. The community is lucky to have him.

Alice Sparkly Kat was my very first astrologer. I still try to see them when I can. Their counselling style is second to none. I only wish I come across as that composed and compassionate when I’m with my own clients. They embody what it means to be an astrologer-scholar who is also unapologetically political and progressive. They are also an exceptional writer: their astrological writing online and in print merits multiple rereads. I highly recommend their Cancer book and Postcolonial Astrology, both exemplars of what experimental astrologically inspired creative non-fiction can be.
