This New Moon in Pisces, choose ease
This year’s new moon in late Pisces will have had quite the journey by the time it conjoins the sun. Upon entering the sign of Pisces, the new moon will have conjoined Mercury retrograde and the north node, then bump into a mid-Pisces Mars and a trine to an exalted Jupiter in Cancer which stationed direct last week. At the point of the new moon, it will sextile Uranus in late Taurus. The moon is dripping wet and very pruned by the time it locks onto the sun. Taking the energies of all her engagements, she carries storytelling (Mercury), fight (Mars) and generosity (Jupiter) into her merging with the sun.
Water signs are about emotions and connections. Pisces in particular is Jupiter’s nocturnal domicile, a more interior manifestation of Jupiter’s significations. Inclined to softness, stickiness and sensitivity, Pisces in particular is about contemplating connections that might strike others as unconventional or even undesirable. The most mutable of the mutable signs, Pisces erodes boundaries and borders the way waves lap at the shoreline—between reality and unreality, facts and delusion, self and other, living and dead. Einstein’s theory of relativity is peak Pisces sun. So is Murdoch’s right-wing media empire of spin and delusion. Large-mindedness and small-mindedness are linked to our relationship to scarcity and abundance, sharing and gatekeeping. Astrologer Sam Reynolds once said that the Pisces fish could just as well be a shark. If the Pisces-es in your life can generate intensely contradictory reactions—how can they be so x while also being so y—you’re seeing the mutability of the sign and its significations, the both/and of it all.
Incidentally, Einstein and Murdoch both have the sun in late Pisces and the moon in Sagittarius—both Jupiter-ruled signs. Einstein’s Jupiter is in Aquarius while Murdoch’s is in Cancer, Jupiter’s exaltation sign where it also currently is at the time of this writing so Murdoch is having a once-in-12-years Jupiter return right now. Nobody with any celestial pattern is inherently good or inherently bad and having the luminaries in the signs of the Benefics does not automatically incline one to an ethical life. Personal choices matter most. The stark difference in the legacies of Einstein and Murdoch show this.
Back to the new moon. The Moon is about bodily needs and responses: gut reactions, stimulation, safety. The Pisces Moon finds safety in anything that lowers rather than increases the heart rate. This is a moon that values ease and leisure and reminds us that things don’t have to be hard, that we often make things hard for ourselves. In a new moon especially, staying low to the ground, choosing coziness and languidity, can create space for grace, insight and recovery.
Some horoscopes for the New Moon:
Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): Where do your trust issues come from? How have your instincts supported you, or failed you? What are your grounding rituals and reality-test rituals?
Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): What does slowing down mean for you? Can you reimagine slowing down as anything beyond ‘being lazy’ or ceding ground? How many speeds are you capable of?
Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): How do you divest from the notion that forgiving is forgetting, that forgiving is losing? How can you practice self-forgiveness? Can you reimagine forgiveness as simply acceptance?
The sun enters Aries this Saturday morning in Naarm (Melbourne, Australia), signalling the astrological New Year. This same morning Mercury finally stations direct though still in Pisces where Mercury is in detriment. I felt this Mercury retrograde a LOT and so look forward to less brain fog and less technical hiccups.
The sun is exalted in Aries, a sign associated with action and decisiveness. Those with air and fire-heavy charts may find a spring in the step, a spice in the vibes, a quickening of the pulse. With Venus, Saturn and Neptune already here, this Aries season is a time of generational shifts. More on this in a later post.
Thanks for reading this far! I am very excited to announce my Venus in Aries Support system, a live virtual workshop, the first in a new series of independent astrology-themed programming. 24th March (next Tuesday), 7pm Melbourne, AU time (AEDT) on Zoom. Early bird tickets here.
